CIE, the Internet all-arounder expanding for 3D - 01.03.2010
CIE sees multiuser 3D virtual worlds as an essential part of the Future Internet. The Center for Internet Excellence (CIE) aims to create internet-driven growth opportunities by combining cutting-edge innovations and open networks with agile new business creation. 'The natural continuum is to use Internet and networks in the 3D virtual world,' says Heikki Huomo, CIE Director.
CIE projects are multi-disciplinary with the main focus in technology but closely linked with application development, usability and social sciences. The center drives for the Living Lab approach to obtain user-driven innovations to empower people to contribute for the Future Internet.
CIE sees multiuser 3D virtual worlds as an essential part of the Future Internet. The user interface has developed from first users typing commands in a text based environment to masses using Microsoft Windows since 1980's, and finally moving to use Internet with the emergence of WWW.
'The natural continuum is to use Internet and networks in the 3D virtual world,' says Heikki Huomo, CIE Director. 'We are committed to make world-class research, and even when talking about virtual worlds, we strongly focus on real business needs', Heikki continues.
To strengthen the CIE research program portfolio on the 3D Internet area, CIE hired Jani Pirkola to coordinate the 3D research. Jani Pirkola is a former program manager for
the realXtend project, and is a widely acknowledged expert on virtual worlds.
'I am excited to get this opportunity to advance the use of virtual worlds in general and to build enablers for wide adoption of the technology', Jani comments.
'Stay tuned for interesting CIE news in the near future', he ends.
