The free wireless PanOulu network has expanded to several counties near Oulu during the summer. PanOulu reaches now people living in Kempele, Kiiminki, Oulunsalo, Muhos and Liminka. Haukipudas is still a work in progress, and Hailuoto and Tyrnävä still have to wait for their turn.
The base stations have been mainly installed in county administration buildings and health care centers. Counties have also suggested places where they want access to the free wireless network, such as libraries and youth centers, and also ice hockey rinks and other sports venues.
The installation comes at a fairly inexpensive price for the counties. PanOulu has received EU funding for purchasing equipment and a county only pays for the number of base stations in their area. A county can get a base station up and running for 600 euros.
